Brisfest Brief

Here is a pasted copy of the brief for everyone to peruse

As this is the first time that BrisFest will be at Ashton Court we need to bring it to life for people, we need to show them what it will look and feel like.

Overall identity

We already have a BrisFest logo but we’re keen to come up with a symbol/emblem and visual identity that represents our move to Ashton Court. We like the idea of using a heart, representing people’s love of Ashton Court Festival, and the place it holds in their hearts. The symbol will be used as the basis for a marketing campaign (across a range of media) to drive ticket sales ahead of the event. It will be used to create anticipation for the event, with the aim of it becoming instantly recognisable as representing BrisFest at Ashton Court.

Print Material to be produced

A3 full colour poster (the same design to be used for the cover of the promo map below)
Stickers in range of dimensions – “I’m going to BrisFest at Ashton Court 2012”
A folded promotional map/flyer. A3 folded to A5 with a map of the festival inside showing everything that people can expect to see at the event.
Vinyl banners 8ft by 3ft with logo and key info only.
A5 flyers. One side will be the same as the posters above, the back will be the line up
A0 black & white posters to include the headliners and key info.
Programme booklet with full lines ups and clash finders inside. The cover to be the same as the poster design above

Digital items to be produced

A new website header image
1. 3 buttons for the website; Tickets, Get Involved, The Festival
2. Flash animation: virtual tour of festival site at Ashton Court with animated character walking around the site and showing the main features of BrisFest 2012

A 500 word evaluation should also be handed in reflecting on your practice and future aspirations, statement, influences, etc.

Dave Sparshot graduated in 2006 and has since gone on to work for some big clients. These inlcude the New York Times, Nike and the Times. His work is reportage based, which has continued to develop after a project on St.Nicholas market, done during his study at UWE.

Jack only graduated in 2010 but got a start doing album art for Sky Larkin. Since then he's done work for Google, ItsNiceThat and The Sunday Telegraph. Currently getting more work in the Editorial field Jacks career shows no signs of slowing down. Coming from a print Aesthetic, Jacks sense of colour is particularly spot on.

This will be assessed so it is absolutely critical that all students attend both days and not one or the other. Presentations will be done in the first year studio.

Ben Newman Talk

Assessment sheets and grades will be available 11.00am friday 11th november. Please make sure you collect and sign these at 11.00am . The new Pro practice 2 module will be launched at this point as well so arrive on time.

Zara's cut-out illustrations have been featured in the AOI images annual for the past 3 years. Her ideas first approach has gotten work with some big clients, including Waitrose, The Guardian and The National Trust. Zara graduated in 2008 with a first class degree.

NY Illustration Week

Phil thought it would be good for you lot to get a sense of whats going on in the Industry. This week is New Yorks first official 'Illustration Week'. Which aims to be developed into something akin to the NY 'Fashion Week'. It will be interesting to see where it goes over the next few years. Most of the events are being run by the Society of Illustrators (SOI), the American equivalent of the AOI. Anyway, more information can be found at.

We thought it might be interesting for people to be aware of some of the great alumnus' the course has produced to help give a sense of continuity.

First up is Ben Newman. Ben has now worked for some pretty impressive clients, including The Tate and Wired Magazine. His work has also been used by Nobrow over the years which has brought him critical success with creative review and the guardian. His first solo show in 3 years is currently on at the Nobrow gallery in London, so go have a look!

Hello,

We are a London based creative duo who are looking for someone to help us with a Halloween themed window display on Park Street Bristol tomorrow.

We are hoping to have most of the main bits for the window done by tomorrow morning, but there will still be making to be done.

The ideal person to help us will be a creative who is confident with a pair of scissors and a paintbrush and is happy to run errands to shops to pick up last minute bits and pieces. So a bike would be essential to save time!

There is no budget for this project, it is just a fun idea we had and something for our portfolios so we're afraid we won't be able to pay you, however we will buy you lunch and make you cups of tea. Maybe even a Hobnob or 12!

If anyone fancies getting involved in this project please e-mail us telling us a bit about yourselves and we will get back to you. Please feel free to send examples of your work along too, we would love to see it.

Hi Guys,

Phil asked me to post up Shaun Tan's 'The Lost Thing' animation from Youtube. It won best animated short at the oscars this year and is a great example of how a visual language can be adapted to other things.

Those first years who did the painting workshop last week might of also remembered one his picture books that Laurie Stansfield brought in. His work often uses complementary colour, the image below is mostly orange and blue pigment, but still feels very colourful.
